| The 58th Wintersköl Celebration |
|
|
| Date(s): |
01/14/10 - 01/17/10
|
| Details: |
Wintersköl, Aspen's annual toast to winter, celebrates its 58th anniversary. From a wild and wacky Canine Fashion Show to the infamous Wintersköl Parade, Wintersköl sums up the character of Aspen. Wintersköl features more than 40 events in downtown Aspen and at all four ski areas: Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass Mountain. Favorites include the Canine Fashion Show, the Buttermilk Uphill Race, Wintersculpt, and a spectacular torchlight descent and fireworks over Aspen Mountain. There are always a few surprises, too.
Wintersköl dates back to a quiet January in 1951 when local Aspenites decided to celebrate Aspen's unique Nordic lifestyle with an eclectic weekend of festivities - mostly floorshows at local taverns. As Aspen has grown and evolved into a world-class resort, Wintersköl has matured into an elaborate, well-organized event with major corporate sponsors and international talent. But the celebration retains its purpose as a week of fun in the snow for residents and visitors.

6:00-8:00 p.m.: Aspen Institute Dinner Discussion "Why Goethe? Why 1949? Why Aspen?"
Aspen Meadows Restaurant -- "Something very strange happened in Aspen in the summer 1949 (exactly sixty years ago). Even though there were very few hotel rooms, 2000 people came here. They came from every state except for two, and they came from 11 different countries. Come find out who came; what they were so "worked up" about, and why Time Magazine featured this unusual meeting in Aspen, Colorado as its cover story on July 11,1949! After seeing this multi-media presentation, you will have a new understanding of the "big bang" that caused Aspen to be the unique spiritual, cultural, intellectual and recreational center that it is today. Narrated by Steve Wickes, an Associate Director at the Aspen Institute. Join us at the Aspen Institute for dinner and to learn more!
